Discovering New Ways of Adapting to a Simply Sustainable Way of Life!
A Trip to the Rediscovery Centre
|
A small and friendly group of PPN Environmental Pillar members and community Climate Coaches went to Ballymun in Dublin on Saturday 13th September to have a tour of the four social enterprises within the Rediscovery Centre. (The Rediscovery Centre)
- Rediscover Furniture – where old furniture finds a fresh start through repair, restoration and upcycling.
- Rediscover Paint – where unwanted paint is collected from recycling centres and reuses it to create new colours.
- Rediscover Fashion – where new life is breathed into old textiles: repairing, restoring, redesigning and upcycling.
- Rediscover Cycling – where old bikes begin a new journey.
There is also an eco-shop there, offering a wide range of high-quality eco-friendly products that are not only good for the environment, but good for ourselves and our homes.
Along with our lunch in the Boiler House café, we had an inspiring and fun visit with lots of learning and connections made. By the way, the Boiler House Café prioritises sustainability, reuse and the minimisation of waste. Takeaway coffee is only available in reusable cups there, and single-use plastic is banned….now there’s a thought.

Sited on Dublin City Council land, the Muck & Magic community garden was having an Open Day, just across from the Rediscovery Centre. The group headed over to the event and found that it is a small and beautiful oasis in the heart of the Ballymun community. The garden was started in 2011, when a local group, created a network of raised beds for growing vegetables and it is so much more now.
It was a great example of what we can do with a patch of land anywhere!
Muck and Magic Community Garden – Dublin Community Growers
Now we are looking at where else we can network and learn ways to adapt to the changing climate and the challenges it brings to communities.

Affordable Housing Survey
|
Tipperary County Council, in accordance with “Housing for All”, is actively working on developing affordable housing over the coming years. The purpose of an affordable housing scheme is to provide houses at a reduced price for eligible applicants. The Council wishes to establish the level of interest in County Tipperary for affordable dwellings.
The information will be used to inform the Council on the level of demand and locations for affordable houses and the house prices that people can afford. This will aid in designing a scheme with the right type of homes, at the locations and price points that suit peoples needs. Availability of any affordable housing schemes progressed by the Council in the future will be advertised separately, and there will be a formal application process when these schemes are ready for occupation.

Annual Green Ribbon Campaign
|
Annual Green Ribbon Campaign which is in its 16th year this September. The campaign is delivered by our Partner Shine. Shine aims to empower people with mental health difficulties and their families through support, information and education. The organisation advocates for social change by promoting stigma reduction and social inclusion in its work towards a more compassionate Ireland.
The Green Ribbon Campaign is a pivotal opportunity for Shine to lead the way on stigma reduction around mental illness in Ireland. The Green Ribbon acts as a symbol of solidarity, encouraging us all to engage in open conversations and break down the barriers surrounding mental illness. Hundreds of thousands of ribbons are distributed nationwide free of charge as part of the campaign and hundreds of different events and activities are organised in September in workplaces and in the community. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness by getting as many people as possible talking about mental health and helping to end mental health stigma. You don’t need to be an expert to start talking about mental health or have all the answers. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to let someone know you are there for them and simply listen.
You can support the campaign by wearing the Green Ribbon, by hosting an event or by sharing the campaign on your social media platforms. You can download a supporter’s pack via the link below that contains all of the resources that you might need including campaign logos, posters and graphics
