Tipperary PPN’s Secretariat members are all members of various community groups across the county. This month Niamh, Tipperary, Cahir & Cashel Municipal District’s Community & Voluntary representative, talks about an evening of international music titled “The Melting Pot” hosted by Lion’s Club and Fáilte Isteach.
|
Music, a unifying experience
Music is a powerful unifier, capable of dissolving boundaries and connecting us at the most fundamental human level. In the last few weeks there have been several outstanding and inclusive musical events in Cahir, reflecting the diverse nature of this town and its people.
The Lion’s Club and Fáilte Isteach hosted an evening of international music entitled ‘The Melting Pot’ in Cahir Castle on the 20th of April. The evening featured a wide range of musical styles and instruments. The event was opened by local choir, Cahir to Sing which has members from various countries including Germany, Finland and the USA. This was followed by Andrii Rybalko of Ukraine who sang a very moving song of war. Fidelma Nugent played Hungarian folk dances on the accordion and Marie McGrath sang ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ accompanied by Norma Barry. Marina Moskalyk of Ukraine, who teaches music at Rockwell Academy, Cahir, played several pieces on piano. The night also included many young performers both from Ireland (Cahir Comhaltas) and overseas such as Andrei Botezatu of Moldova on saxophone and Masha Shtykhar and Daryna Potlova of Ukraine on piano and guitar. Twins Dara and Juliana Stepanchak of Ukraine delighted the audience with their duet. Patsy Mc Guirk, who coordinated the evening, played harp with Celine McGrath on flute. The evening was rounded off with Father Bobby and Jimmy O’Farrell who sang an Irish Immigrant song.
The following weekend another wonderful musical evening was hosted by Cahir Historical Society in the Castle. Jimmy Crowley and Eve Telford put on a spellbinding concert featuring ballads learned from the Irish Travelling Community. They also dedicated several of their songs to the cause of peace for Palestine. It was a moving evening which seemed to transcend time and place in its celebration of the ballad, Traveller musical culture and the healing, connective power of music.
Cahir also has regular inclusive musical evenings with Comhaltas taking the lead in the Shamrock pub every Friday evening. All are welcome to listen or to join in with the musicians on the night. There is also a wonderful singing circle which gathers every 3rd Tuesday of the month in The Hill Bar. A wide variety of songs are performed and enjoyed including ballads, pop songs, blues and songs from musicals. Again all are most welcome to either join in or simply enjoy listening to the music.
In Cahir, we find, music creating an inclusive space where people of diverse ages, backgrounds and nationalities can express themselves and be heard within an inclusive safe space.

Climate Engagement Survey of Ireland – Climate Actions Work Initiative
|
The Department would appreciate your cooperation in completing the climate engagement survey of Ireland. The survey, conducted by Ipsos B&A, captures specific information about your organisation and then asks you to submit examples of key climate-related initiatives that your organisation is engaged in. The survey length will vary depending on the number of initiatives you choose to share (up to five). We would recommend selecting a time slot when you are free and able to dedicate the necessary time as this survey will need to be completed in one session.
In addition to internal analysis by the Department, the survey results will be published as an interactive map, showcasing the breadth and diversity of climate action across Ireland.
The survey can be found here: https://research3.ipsosinteractive.com/mrIWeb/mrIWeb.dll?I.Project=IE2401015101WE
This is an important opportunity to communicate your organisation’s work in climate-related activities alongside others across the country and on behalf of the DECC we appreciate you taking the time to fill out this survey.
If you have queries, please get in touch with Ipsos B&A at IE-PA-ClimateMapping@ipsos-online.com

Recruitment of young people to participate in study on bereavement supports following loss through death by suicide
|
As part of the study, we want to hear from young people who have been bereaved by suicide:
- We are recruiting adolescents (aged 15-17 years) through their parents/guardians
- We are recruiting young adults (aged 18-24 years) directly
Taking part in this study would involve participating in an individual interview. This will be a discussion between the young person and a researcher where the researcher will ask questions about the support that would be helpful for young people after they experience a death by suicide. The interview may take approximately 1 hour and will be held online.
More information about the study is available in the attached information sheets (dedicated information sheet for parents of adolescents, adolescents themselves and young adults). Please follow this link to express your interest. If you have any queries about our study, you can email grace.cully@ucc.ie or eibhlin.walsh@ucc.ie.

Online suicide prevention training from the HSE NOSP
|
‘Let’s Talk About Suicide’ – a new online suicide prevention training programme from the HSE NOSP – has been developed to provide people with the knowledge and confidence to have a conversation if they are concerned that someone may be thinking about suicide. It aims to provide people who access it with a sense of hope and reassurance that suicide prevention is possible.
This introductory programme uses a mix of guided online content, video and interactive questions. Participants can pause and recommence the programme at their own convenience. On average, the programme will take 60 minutes to complete, but participants can work at their own pace.
The programme supports people to:
- Recognise the signs that someone may be thinking about suicide.
- Confidently engage with a person and speak openly about suicide.
- Let the person know what organisations, people can help.
- Practice self-care after having a conversation with a person having thoughts of suicide.

ICCL launches advocacy initiative Rochtain
|
We hope to deliver a series of online and in-person workshops on a variety of relevant topics such as: ICCL is proud to present our new advocacy initiative, Rochtain. With supporting funding from the St. Stephen’s Green Trust, Rochtain will work to democratise and enhance the advocacy capacity of community and voluntary organisations through training, information seminars and 1-1 support.
Rochtain is the Irish word for “access” or “attainment”. Over the last number of years, ICCL has observed a worrying gap in the advocacy landscape in the non-profit sector in Ireland. While our allies are engaging in critical and groundbreaking work in their areas of expertise, they often find it difficult to bring this work to the attention of legislators. While large non-profits can employ full- or part-time advocacy staff or engage the work of consultants, this isn’t an option for many in the sector. As a result, many organisations struggle to understand where, when and how best to intervene with elected representatives to best advance their causes in a strategic manner.
The training will be complemented with supporting materials and a support service for any advocacy queries you may have.
The initiative will coincide with local and European elections and a budget cycle. Depending on when it is called, the trainings may also align with a general election campaign. This will allow us to assist groups with not only day-to-day advocacy, but also things like preparing a budget proposal and manifesto asks. This training will be open for application to all community, voluntary and non-profit organisations.
We are particularly interested in providing training to organisations which Do not have full time policy/advocacy staff, Are working to improve the status of minoritized groups or new communities, Would not be in a position to pay for similar training privately.

EPA publishes Bathing Water Quality in Ireland report for 2023
|
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has today published the Bathing Water Quality in Ireland report for 2023 which shows that water quality at the majority of Ireland’s bathing waters was of a high standard. 77 per cent of bathing sites have ‘Excellent’ water quality while 97 per cent meet the minimum standard.
- Bathing water quality in 2023 was high overall, with 97 per cent (143 of 148) of sites meeting or exceeding the minimum standard, the same number as in 2022.
- 114 bathing sites (77 per cent) had excellent water quality, down from 117 in 2022.
- The number of beaches with poor bathing water quality increased to five, compared with three in 2022. Discharges from wastewater overflows and misconnections are the main issue at these beaches.
- The wet weather in July and August 2023 put pressure on our beaches resulting in more beach closures to protect public health.
- The rainfall events in 2023 highlighted the need to build climate resilience into the effective management of bathing waters
Bathing water quality can be impacted by heavy rainfall. This results in waste water overflows and in runoff from agricultural lands and urban areas which can cause short-term deterioration in water quality. In 2023 urban waste water related incidents were the most frequently reported cause of beach closures. Run-off from agriculture, fouling from dogs left on the beach, wastewater from properties going to surface water drains rather than sewer (known as misconnections) and algal blooms also impacted on bathing waters.
